Internal Sustainable Practice – Up-Recycling Furniture for Home – Part II

Waste and trash debris is a magnified problem across the world, affecting societies and futures to come. Although a lot of focus is placed on recycling and dealing with waste to save the environment, there is also a third element: up-recycling. Up-recycling refers to the act of converting items that would be considered otherwise waste to useable and even design-forward items.

For the second year, some BUMC staff from the Body Shop continues their brilliant idea to convert wood pallets received from parts delivery to canes or pieces of art, shelves, planter boxes, benches, bed frames, and other home décor pieces. Most wooden pallets are single-use items, which can create a problematic linear waste stream, used once and thrown away. Recycling was an option for our Body Shop staff especially that many of them are spirit of art and can change any wood of a beautiful and useful piece of art or furniture.

As last year, The Body Shop department donated the furniture and décor pieces to impoverished families. this initiative helped to improve the work environment and significantly contributed in carbon neutrality measures.

Following the example of BUMC’s mother company, Toyota Motor Corporation, BUMC earnestly engages in the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs as declared by the United Nations. SDGs are the blueprint to achieve an overall better society. With this activity, the #11 - SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES goal was addressed. BUMC ensures an effective and comprehensive “Sustainable Cities and Communities” program – and believes that this activity should embody BUMC’s initiatives for the preservation of the global environment.
